Al Caldwell is a multi-instrumentalist from St. Louis, Missouri. Born in the city of the Blues, he was mentored by many of St. Louis’ finest musicians. Albert King, Johnnie Johnson, and Oliver Sain were a few of his mentors in the field of Blues music. After attending The Visual and Performing Arts High School, he was offered several music scholarships for classical trumpet. Al accepted an academic scholarship to Mississippi Valley State, which allowed him to switch to acoustic and electric bass. It was then that Al had the opportunity to study music theory with Mulgrew Miller. The faculty encouraged him to study jazz. After only one year in college, he played with everyone who could teach him. Phillip Wilson, John Hicks, Dr. Lonnie Smith, and Stanley Turrentine were a few of the people he was blessed to share the stage with. Al wanted to take the bass to another level. It was then that he met the father of the 6-string bass: Anthony Jackson. Al has also had the opportunity to associate with and learn from Jaco Pastorius, Chuck Rainey and Bob Babbitt, to name a few. Al has toured the world as a bassist with top artists such as Johnny Kemp, Jonathan Butler, and Vanessa Williams. Al Caldwell is also one of the pioneers in the Extended Range Bass (ERB) Movement.
